Audi A7 or Golf GTI?

I am in the market for an up market executive car. I really like the Audi A7 and used values for low mileage example are within our £35,000 budget. The big "but" is that it would mean diesel. We do under 7000 miles a year with a predominance of weekly journeys being under 10 miles interspersed with maybe on average five trips a month over 50 miles on motorways. Is this a recipe for DPF disaster?

Our fall back option remains a new Volkswagen Golf GTi which was a lovely drive though loses points in terms of road presence. What do you suggest we do?

The 3.0 litre biturbo is a tremendous drive in the Audi A7. The more turbos, generally the quicker the engine gets hot, which is good for DPFs. If you take the plunge (or the dive getting down into an A7), just make sure you don't repeatedly drive short distances from cold. And check the options on anything you buy, because it would not have been hard for the first owner to add £30,000 worth to the original price of the car.
