Which reliable, economical manual car would you recommend for my 18-year-old daughter?

I am looking to buy a secondhand car for my daughter (she will be 18 in July) who is presently having driving lessons. I am looking for good reliability, good visibility, economical, 5-door, low insurance group, petrol or diesel and with a manual gearbox. I would prefer to spend around £5000-6000 but would consider more if a new car with good warranty, perhaps up to £8000.

There are several cars that would fit your requirements but if you're after a long warranty - there are two manufacturers to consider - Kia (who offer up to seven years on certain models) and Hyundai (which have five years). The Kia Picanto is well worth considering. We've seen 09-plate models in the classifieds with only a few thousand miles on the clock for less than £6000. It's a five-door and easy to drive with great all round visibility, plus it's cheap to insure. Similarly, there are Hyundai i10 models available for similar money and a similar age. Both these were at main dealers who will be able to give you full details about what the warranties cover. Alternatively check out their websites: www.kia.co.uk/New-Cars/7-year-warranty/Your-Questi...x or www.hyundai.co.uk/owners/5YearWarranty/
