Need a car for the school run - what do you suggest?

I'd like a recommendation for a car to be used predominantly for the school run (1.3 miles each way) for three child passengers. Also, this car will be used for the weekly shop, so needs decent boot space. What do you recommend?

If you're buying very old, with no DPF, get a diesel. If it's less then six years old or new: petrol.

Simplest makes the most sense: a Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107 5-door. From 2012 they were VED free. Before that, just £20pa tax.
