New, small, economical, commuter car?

My 55 Ford Ka's gearbox has just given up the ghost; can you recommend a suitable economical hatchback for my 100 mile a day commute?

My budget is the lower end of, £5000 - £8000. Is the Toyota Yaris 1.4D that you often recommend right for me? I have read about possible gearbox issues?

Yes a Yaris 1.4D-4D or a Yaris 1.33.
