Should I change the timing chain on my 3 Series?
My local mechanic, who has been pretty good with my cars so far, is strongly suggesting that the timing chain be replaced now at its 150,000 mile service. The mechanic agrees that there are no obvious noises etc. to suggest any imminent problem ,he says it´s a valid precaution.
I have been searching but can find nothing definitive. While there have indeed been problems with this engines' chain, when you think of the numbers sold it doesn't strike me as a common fault. In fact I didn't see mention of it in your Reveiw 'Whats Bad.'
I have my doubts that spending £1600 on a new set is really necessary.

Never heard of this as a preventative measure. If it's rattling, yes. Otherwise, as long as it's in clean oil it should be okay. Obviously wise to change the oil and filter frequently at this sort of mileage.
