What are your thoughts on the new Mazda 6, and why are modern cars so aggressively styled?
Do you have any idea why many car manufacturers are currently making the front profiles of their cars look more and more aggressive and intimidating? We hear of far too many instances of "road rage" or other examples of bad driving so surely it's not in the interests of (or spirit of) road safety to be designing cars that are likely to stir up aggression in drivers. Another safety aspect is that the swept back lighting clusters that go with the look would seem to compromise the quality of lighting of the road ahead, particularly on unlit twisty rural roads.
Have you any thoughts on the shortly to be launched Mazda 6? Are there any issues with its new engine? From the early images I have seen, Mazda is a company who have taken this aggressive look to extremes with the styling of the new 6. Our present car is a 2004 Mazda 6, which has served us well and faithfully.

Manufacturers are now struggling hard to give their cars corporate identities. Most successful are Audi and KIA (actually styled by the same man, Peter Schreyer, who went from Audi to KIA). BMWs, too, are unmistakable and, from next year, all Fords will have an Aston Martin-like trapezoidal grille. But many manufacturers, like Toyota, seem to have lost their way. The lights are styled the way they are for aerodynamic efficiency. Those on next year's Mondeo are wholly LED, save 2g/km CO2 and are designed to last the life of the car.
I tested the stunning, completely unaggressive and genuinely “all-new” Mazda 6 Skyactiv in France on 30 September. The technology has been developed and tested for years, and has been available in the Mazda CX-5 since May. Results here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mazda/mazda-6-2013.../.
