Which small car gives good fuel consumption, low road tax and a high seating position?

I need to replace my beloved Toyota RAV4 auto which is 13 years old and has done 105,000 miles with a more economical secondhand car. The requirements are for a car of small size with low road tax, good fuel consumption, automatic transmission, a high seating position due to arthritic knees and no longer than four metres. My budget is £8000 and my mileage is around 8000 per year including an annual trip to France. I would value your opinion.

Skoda has announced the price of the base model Citigo automated manual at £8195. Apparently, it’s a bit like the Addams Family butler, but you won't get a cheaper automatic than that. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/skoda/citigo-2012/?

What car is best for me? I like a high driving position, boot space for camping, good fuel economy, ideally some bodywork protection/trims, good all-round driving visibility, cheap to insure/tax.
