What is the lifespan of a catalytic converter?

What would you say is a fairly typical lifespan of a catalytic converter? Is using cheaper quality fuel likely to reduce the life of a cat? And are there any other factors (apart from misfiring) that can reduce the life of a cat?

Cats can last anything from a few thousand miles to the lifetime of the car. They last best on cars regularly driven distances on the motorway and worst on cars driven short distances from cold and switched off still cold. But any misfire caused, for example, by a duff coil, could spike the cat and set up a hot spot inside it that partially melts the core. Bump starting can also spike cats by depositing neat petrol inside them.
