What can real-world drivers do to improve the ride quality of their cars which are supplied on large wheels?

Once again, thanks for your great 'column' in the Saturday's Motoring Section. I appreciate all your comments, and especially those on big tyres and small wheels giving a better ride, and liked your yesterday's reference to footballer's wives and rap stars. The poor ride of modern cars is a real bugbear for me. Motoring journalists - not you - drive road cars around smooth circuits demanding firmer suspension, whilst our roads get rougher, and the car buyers suffer - especially some cars that have a downright atrocious low speed ride in town. I liked Erin Baker's statement on the Ampera's review (page M13), "...the added bonus is the Ampera's wonderfully supple, smooth ride." Hooray! But, perhaps like Erin, we don't think we have "the inclination to spend £30,000" on this car, just to get its wonderful ride.

Pretty easy really. Go for 15-inch wheels with 195/65 R15s, or 16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16s. My Mazda 5 on the latter, with Toyo J46s, is absolutely brilliant, and handles and steers brilliantly too. You only need lower profile, wider rubber for track days, and for them it's better to have a separate set of 19-inch or 20-inch wheels with Pilot Supersports anyway.
