Trip counter mileage recorded as total mileage on MoT by mistake - how can we have it corrected?

Our four-year-old Nissan Note has just been for its second MoT. Unfortunately, the information on the dashboard was showing the 'trip' mileage since we had bought the car a year ago, and the garage recorded this figure as the car's total mileage by mistake. The trip read 4846.4, but the decimal point is so minute as to be practically invisible, and the mileage has been registered on the DVLA computer as 48464.

We discovered that further pressing of the buttons on the steering wheel brings up other information including the vehicle's total mileage of 31,246, meaning we have actually done 4846 miles since the last MoT. As the car is only insured for a mileage of less than 10,000 per year this would compromise our policy, and the hugely increased mileage would affect the car's value. What can we do to have this corrected?

This is a growing problem because the DVLA refuses to change the recorded mileages even when mistakes have been made. I think it can be changed if done within a fortnight, so it's vital for all readers to check the mileage on their MoT print-outs as soon as they get them. There may well be legal redress under the Data Protection Act over material recorded against a car that is not correct. The warning here is to check that your car is showing its true total mileage, not trip mileage when you submit it for an MoT.
