I contacted you previously when I was first experiencing high engine oil consumption (Longlife) with my Audi A5, purchased new in July 2010. In the last two years I have had regular interchange with the Audi dealership and Audi UK about the problem. In total frustration, I involved SMMT who initially were sympathetic, but eventually advised that they couldn't assist me further.
The bottom line is that Audi has now written to me to advise that the oil consumption test shows an improvement from 900 miles/litre to 3,100 miles/litre and that “the vehicle is now operating within the specification supplied by the brand.”
Whilst the oil test may reveal this figure, in reality I am adding a litre of oil every 1,600/1,800 miles, as soon as the 'yellow oil warning light' illuminates. Compared to previous cars, including Audis with a 'Longlife oil engine' the oil consumption is massive. Having had 5 Audis and 4 VWs over the years, I feel Audi could have done more to assist.
The Audi owners manual suggests that the car could consume 0.5L of oil every 1,000km, so they are covered technically. Manuals for previous Audis with 'long life oil engines' have also suggested that oil consumption could be similarly high, but the reality was that the poorest oil consumption was around 3,500 miles/500ml.

It's ironic. But, in fact, what happens over the 20,000 'life' of Longlife oil is that the owner may have to pour in so much oil he effectively adds the same amount as two or three oil changes within that 20,000 miles. Had he been changing the oil at 5,000-mile intervals he would not have noticed the excess consumption.

My 2010 petrol 1.8 TSI is drinking oil at 65,000 miles. The missing engine gasket has been replaced (and the sump protector emptied). Would a quality mineral oil last longer than synthetic?
