Steer crazy
It's time to have an intelligent discussion about Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS). Its rubbish isn't it? My 2009 Toyota Avensis 1.8Vti Tourer with EPAS is thrown of course in a random fashion by poor road surfaces, and requires constant small correction on motorways, like being blown about in a strong wind.
I've had new tyres, and 4-wheel tracking, but I now believe that this over-lively steering is just the way Toyota meant it to be. I see that for 2012 models they have 'revised the EPAS software' but don't offer any retrofit. Are there any companies specialising in re-programming EPAS computers, or is wobbly steering just the latest technological advance and we have to get used to it?

EPAS has got a lot better. But it does involve a delicate relationship between the software and hardware and can vary from car to car even when they are all supposed to be the same.
Alignment and steering angle sensor setting are critical. Though your car should still be under its 5 year warranty you might get some help from ecutesting.co.uk The reason EPAS is fitted is it uses less CO2 than engine driven or electrically driven hydraulic systems.
