Is there a more efficient way of displaying speed limits?

With reference to the Government’s plans to install extra speed limit signs. I can see the logic as to why this should be thought necessary. My wife and I recently toured an unfamiliar area using ordinary roads as much as possible, but what should have been enjoyable was spoilt by the constantly changing limits and the frequent speed cameras where, of course, no limit sign was available to double check you were doing the correct speed.

However, on our return we had a similar drive through East Sussex except that it was a pleasure, simply because the speed limits were painted on the road surface where you couldn't miss them and because you took them in as part of your usual road observations, you didn't forget them. Far more effective than extra roadside signage and hopefully cheaper.

Good point. But motorcyclists don't like this because the painted signs get very slippery. Another reader has the brilliantly simple idea of marking street lamps with reflective bands. One band for 30mph, two bands for 40mph, three bands for 50mph. No extra posts. No slippery paint on the roads.
