Can I change my BMW 1 Series' tyres for something with a more comfortable ride?

I have recently changed my car from a BMW 3 Series to a 1 Series 1.6 model and I have Michelin tyres 205/55 R16 91H runflats and I find the ride to be very hard compared to the 3 Series. I have been told that the runflat tyres contribute to this problem. I have to solve this problem as my wife has serious back problems. It has been suggested that I could have other tyres fitted that would make the ride softer and take the risk concerning punctures, as I have road assistance cover. I would be grateful for your advice and which tyres, if any, you would suggest.

Nothing to stop you fitting standard 205/55 R16 tyres. I suggest Toyos, because my Mazda 5 is very comfortable on Toyos this size (though, of course, the suspension is much softer than a 1 Series). Then you'll need to carry some kind of minor puncture tyre inflator kit. If water-based (such as Slime) it will not ruin the carcass of the tyre.

Your other alternative is to avail yourself of BMW's winter wheel and tyre offer. For £700 you get a set of 195/55 R16 winter tyres on steel rims with wheel trims. These tyres are much softer than summer tyres and have the added benefit of getting you through the snow. Run on them until March, then decide what to do for next summer.
