Can I fit different wheels and tyres to my BMW 330Ci to improve the ride quality?

I have a 2004 BMW 330Ci Sport convertible. It is a lovely car except for the rock-hard ride caused by the sports suspension with 18-inch wheels and 35/40 profile tyres. Since it will need two new tyres soon I have wondered about changing to 17-inch or maybe 16-inch wheels. It would not be worthwhile for a small improvement, so will the improvement be significant? As far as I know, 16-inch wheels were only supplied on the SE model, so would it be OK to use 16-inch wheels with the sports suspension?

Your problem is that this is a 330Ci, not a 318Ci or a 320Ci. Going to smaller wheels, your engine may overtake your tyres and I’m not sure the brakes will fit inside 16-inch wheels. But for the new F30 3 Series BMW has switched from 245/40 R18 fronts and 245/35 R18 rears to 225/45 R18s all round, and the ride is very much better. Any change from manufacturer spec must be disclosed to your insurer.
