Downsizing from a 4x4

I am now at an age when, you will be pleased to hear, caravanning is losing its appeal for me, and therefore no longer require a large 4x4. As a pensioner I would like to have a more economical though reasonably sized car.

With a budget of about £12K I am leaning towards either a Citroen DS4, a C4 or a Hyundai i30. There seems to be a greater choice and better deals with diesels than petrol, but as I spend two or three periods of 6 to 8 weeks per year abroad, and have to leave my car standing at home, I'm not sure this would be a good idea. Your guidance, recommendation and advice would be much appreciated.

The DS4 is badly designed. The C4 makes more sense, but unless you buy it very cheaply in the first place you will suffer very heavy depreciation. The i30 or equivalent KIA Cee'd make the best sense.
