How much would it cost to have a Corsa's bottom end (?) repaired?

Having just shelled out £425 to get my teenage son's Corsa through its MOT on Thursday, I'm a bit p'd off that it broke down on Friday. Breakdown guy said it sounds like the bottom end has gone.

Question is, how much is this likely to cost to have repaired? It's tempting to scrap it but having paid that much just a few days ago and the tax is due in 2 days, I'd like, if possible, to fix it, keep it till he goes to Uni in September then sell it on.

Any ideas on prices if it is the bottom end?

Depends what's damaged.

If merely the bearing shells, then they and the crankshaft can be replaced.

But if the block itself is damaged there is no alternative apart from a replacement engine.
