Is buying abroad a problem?

I want to buy a second hand LHD car (preferably a 4-5 year old German diesel auto estate) which I will leave at my holiday house in France for use while I am staying there. There seems to be a very limited choice of LHD vehicles in this country and they tend to be expensive.

Similarly the second hand market in France is very small compared to the UK and cars with automatic transmission are few and far between. Would it be sensible to consider purchasing a car from a dealer in Germany or Switzerland to import into France? Are there any problems that I would face if I took this route?
