constant note from power steering

I have had my 2007 Ford Galaxy LHD for a year now and since I got it there has been an annoying 'note' coming from the power steering. if i sit with engine running and touch nothing the sound goes away. When I turn the wheel the sound 'note' starts again. I also get a shut down sound a second after switching the car off.

It is unusual as my friend has a late 2008 model RHD and I have not noticed that noise. Is this normal, ie. have they used an improved part for later models?

There has been a problem of contaminated power steering fluid with Ford power steering systems.
