Replacing a high mileage Volvo

Replacing current car - my car is a 2004 Volvo V70T5, with 273,000 miles on the clock. While the engine is strong, the autobox is starting to wear. I have owned it four years and done 120,000 miles without any faults.

Looking to replace it with a similar family car £4000 to spend. What are your recommendations for a strong, safe family estate? Looking at avoiding diesel due to the higher purchase cost and the higher incidence of faults that seem to occur?
