How do I improve the ride on my car?

I have a 2008 Volvo S80 D5. Overall I'm happy with it except for the ride quality, the soft suspension may be good for absorbing bumps but it also causes the car to bounce around giving a fidgety ride. I've noticed that when laden with 4 passengers and luggage the ride is noticeably better, presumably because the suspension is compressed and moving around less.

Could you advise how I might stiffen the suspension a little to improve the ride quality (the handling is fine for my requirements)? Would this involve new shock absorbers or stiffer springs and if I do make modifications, would this affect my insurance?

You don't need to stiffen the springing. You need to reduce the 'bounce' by improving the damping with some aftermarket dampers such as Konis or Bilsteins. Any modifications will need to be disclosed to your insurer and might affect your premium.
