Buying new small car or going with a used hybrid?
The site is incredible - I`m not from the uk but it is still the most comprehensive site especially for the real mpg data.
I`m looking to buy my first car, so I have 1000 questions but and managed to narrow it down to the essentials I hope.
My commute is 20 miles one way but split 50-50 between city and 50-60 mph road to my workplace. Car will also be used to get away from the city for hiking/ biking trips and monthly one or two 370 round trip to the parents. Yearly ~13000 miles
My budget is around £10,500. I`d like to have a low maintenance new or new looking car, and plan to keep it for 5 years or more.
Low fuel cost is more important than the equipment in the car, but I want something I can make not just the commute but the trips home too so my choices are:
2012 Toyota Yaris 1.33 VVTI 6speed manual (test car with 1000 miles)
2012 Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel (new) 10500£ Was first choice but started to get worried about DPF just 10-12 minutes at higher speed daily
2012 Honda Jazz 1.4 i-VTEC 5 speed (0 mi salon car) like the seats for camping equipment/bike, bit more expensive but birthday is coming up... 10800 £
2010 Honda Insight ex navi (Honda dealer suggested 25000mi very good condition) 9500£ low maintenance cost still under warranty, but I`m concerned a bit about the longer trips and the fuel economy on highways at 80-90 mph (is it really worth then the Jazz or the Yaris?) also the road noise because the report are quite contradictory.
2008 Prius (50000mi) same as the Insight and in a bit older car. (not under warranty) 9500£
Sorry for the long list but please take it to my first dealing with a purchase this size.

The Jazz. Makes them most sense. Very reliable. Holds its value quite well. Brilliant seat folding.

Neatly styled. Increased room and better performance than original Jazz. better to drive. Very versatile. CVT-7 returned in February 2011 replacing i-SHIFT. More reliable than first generation Jazz.
Much better than the original. An enjoyable, practical, safe, economical hybrid. Looks good, too. Prius Taxis have run to 400,000 miles plus with very little trouble.
Fairly big boot by class standards, tempting hybrid option, Toyota has an epic reliability record.
