Which oil for my Passat?

I would like to know what engine oil is suitable for Passat SE TDI PD 1.9 automatic 2002?

VAG specifies a special 'synthetic' and very expensive anti sludging oil. You can get the equivalent more cheaply from www.millersoils.co.uk
