Buying a new small car for communting

I have always owned Nissan Micras but have just had my latest car written off. I need to replace this with something of a similar size. I commute each day - 40 miles each way, so need something comfortable and economical. I would like air conditioning if possible. With a price range up to £10,000. Should I stick with the Micra or is there something else that would be better?

A Kia Picanto 1.25, maybe. But Fiestas and Mazda 2s now start at £9,000. Best small car of the lot: the Volkswagen Up, SEAT Mii or Skoda Citigo. £9,350 buys the More Up Bluemotion that is free tax.
