Looking for a new car similar to an Audi A3

I am looking to trade in my ix35 4wd for a smaller estate. The A3 Sportback has my wifes vote but are there any better alternatives. It would be a diesel with similar boot space and economy. Running costs etc are a big concern.

New A3 already announced so only buy current shape if very heavily discounted. Golfs, Leons and Octavias are the same underneath; just don't carry as much status. A previous to current Honda Civic 1.8 petrol is a good alternative because it is cavernous inside and can do 45mpg on petrol.
