Best new car to last a long time

Hi. I know nothing of cars but I want to buy a good used diesel automatic to last for many years. I don't care about buying the latest greatest model every year or two and I just want the best chance of a reliable, long-lasting car which will go on and on an on.

I'm looking at either BMW or Mercedes as I believe these are two highly rated options. In particular I'm considering either a 3 or 5 series BMW or a C or E class Mercedes.

Can you give me advice as to my best options please?

Probably a Mercedes C200 or C220CDI. But anything fitted with piezoelectric fuel injectors could have problems. Avoid all VA/Audis with DSGs/s-tronics. They don't last. Latest BMW F30 3-Series very impressive but can't tell you anything about longevity because it has yet to prove itself.
