Avensing angel

Some 4 years ago I acted on your advice and bought a Toyota Avensis hatchback, 2.2 diesel. We live in an attractive part of the Scottish Highlands and most of my average of 14,000 miles pa is long distance, 70miles plus. I am looking to change, probably to a nearly new equivalent. I have been very pleased with the car and would not object to replacing it with a later model Avensis. I get about 41mpg, drive most of my time on cruise control and would look for a car of equivalent size, room, power and performance. We get a lot of daft drivers up here so I want good security and acceleration to get out of trouble. I would expect to keep the car for 4/5 years and want it to be covered by warranty over that period. Budget about £18k. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd take a look at and test drive the current Avensis, but a petrol Valvematic model as well as the diesel. It's almost as low in CO2 and nearly as economical, yet does not have the things like particulate filters and dual mass flywheels that can go expensively wrong on a diesel. (That said, they don't seem to have gone wrong on yours.)
