Why can't we have hand controls for the brake and accelerator fitted to a manual car?

It looks as if we are going to have to have controls for the brake and accelerator attached to the steering column. No problem, there is a firm near us in South Molton called Adaptor Car who appear to be very good and can do this work for £500. They say that they can only be put on automatic cars because when you drive round a roundabout for example, the driver would not have spare hands to operate the hand controls, steer the car and maybe change gear. Do you have any comment to make on that?

May I also ask what you car you would recommend? We do about 14,000 miles a year including two big trips on motorways, otherwise just urban driving. We are looking in the 1.3 to 1.6 hatchback petrol range, and intend to keep the car for eight years.

I can understand that. You don't have four hands. Best to stick to something well known such as a Ford Focus automatic. You could get it (or another automatic) from an ex-Motability auction at British Car Auctions (www.british-car-auctions.co.uk) or try www.tescocars.com that retails ex-Motability cars, or try www.motorpoint.co.uk
