Why is my Citroen Xsara's engine cutting out?

A couple of weeks ago, as my wife drove to work in our 2000 Citroen Xsara 1.9 diesel estate, the car simply stopped and turned itself off with the engine warning light illuminating on the dash. With our roadside breakdown cover the car was deposited at a local garage with a view to ascertaining the problem. However, their diagnostic equipment could not decipher what had shut down the ECU.

I have had the vehicle transported to another garage locally that apparently has some expertise in this area. They have checked the printout from the laptop and cannot see why the car will not run. It starts and immediately stops running. The car is worth just over £600 but with my luckless life I cannot justify transporting it to a dealership for a £100 an hour diagnosis that could tell me it's useless. Any help would be gratefully received.

One possibility is that the fuel is not coming through, and engine ECU diagnostics do not actually tell you why. It might be that the fuel tank lifter pump has failed, or its earth has failed or its relay has failed or the earth to the relay has failed. It's not uncommon on Citroen Xsras and Picassos. Check the earths first.
