Why did a local Liberal councillor attempt to stop the overhaul of a roundabout on the A31?
Our local paper recently detailed the treatment a crime victim had when his car was damaged by vandals which I hope will be of interest. It is a good example of what is wrong with this country - too soft by half. I think I will send the cutting to our local MP, although as a Liberal I don't expect her to take too much action.
We have a horrendous roundabout at the end of our road on the A31. When improvements were suggested she (MP) and the local Lib-Dem councillors were opposed because the welfare of the rabbits thought to inhabit the roundabout (if they hung about long enough) would be compromised. The roundabout improvements are going ahead. It is a 'six-went way' and there will be seventy traffic lights for this new 'hamburger' junction. Incidentally, the improvements are not for UK road tax payers' benefit, but for the benefit of Olympic Visitors getting to Weymouth for the sailing events, next year.
The A31, part of the Folkestone to Honiton Trunk route, is atrocious through this end of Dorset and we have campaigned for years to get it 'put right'. All we have had in fourteen years are new speed limits. John Major did allocate some money before his enforced retirement, but Prescott put a hold on this whilst he 'conducted a review.’ He lied, of course, and no review or improvements took place. But I digress. Your column is a breath of fresh air in the world of motoring. Long may it continue.

The reason for this is that Brits "don't want to get involved" and are generally too soft, which is why lobbyists representing financial interests are able to get laws passed and no one bothers to stop them. We are a country of mugs. I can attempt to open readers’ minds, but they soon close again. The politicians, bankers and private equity fund investors know this and are laughing all the way to their offshore banks. What happened to your victim would not happen in Arab countries practising Sharia law. Unless they were royalty, the miscreant’s hands or feet would be cut off. It wouldn't happen in China, either, where the vandal would probably be hung. And since Gordon Brown landed every last one of us indebt to the tune of £77,000 to the Chinese, a billion of whom still live on less than a dollar a day, it will be interesting to see how long the level of tolerance and human rights will be allowed to remain.
