Why is our BMW X5 wearing through tyres so fast?

Our BMW X5 3.0sd SE, bought new in September 2008 on a HP agreement, wore its rear tyres through to the metal within four months. BMW accepted there was a fault with the alignment from the factory and replaced them under warranty. The same thing has continued to happen despite all the work they do to try to fix the problem. I am now on the fifth set on rear tyres (20-inch runflats). The front tyres have been replaced once.

In December the rear tyres had worn again and the vehicle was taken down to BMW HQ in Crawley. A full KDS check was carried out and it was found that the rear camber on the right side was outside manufacturer’s tolerance. They set it to the very limit of what is allowed and wrote to me saying this should now rectify the problem. They also said that the eccentric cams for camber adjustment on both rear lower wishbones were worn and unserviceable and were replaced.

I have found that since they carried out this work the handling of the vehicle has deteriorated and it does not hold the road well. I travel on country roads with five children and the car feels very unstable. The tyres have also started to wear on the inside edge again. BMW have clearly accepted that there is a problem with the car as they have now paid for three sets of rear tyres. They have offered to buy back the car for £25,000. Could you please give me some advice?

Standard spec on the SE is 18-inch wheels. The problem is, you ordered the bling 20-inch wheels. I hope that if this is printed it will serve as a warning of the folly of fitting 20-inch wheels to X5s and the like.

Trade book for an '08 with the extra kit is £33,275 minus £4,000 = £29,275 for the extra miles. You have no case against BMW and never did. In UK law your only action can be against the dealer and the finance company jointly for supplying a vehicle 'not of satisfactory quality'. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights
