Could your correspondent MS use half a potato to clear smears from his windscreen?

Regarding MS's email on page M7 of Telegraph Motoring about using Cif on his windscreen; I use a potato cut in half and the exposed part rubbed on the windscreen, followed by the screen washer/wipers to get rid of most smears.

None of the standard cures including toothpaste, Mer, Autoglym, vinegar had worked. That's why he resorted to Cif. But, as I advised, anyone trying this must be VERY careful not to get Cif onto the car's paintwork.
