Please recommend a small 4x4 to replace our BMW 1 Series for use in snow.
We are a retired couple and currently run a 3-year-old 2-litre automatic BMW 1 Series that proved to be totally unsatisfactory during the November/December weather (although it is kept in our garage when not in use). We live in a cul-de-sac on a steep incline and need to change the car to a small 4x4. We are thinking about a Suzuki Grand Vitara but, as we do a small mileage (less than 5,000 miles pa), we do not think that a diesel would be appropriate. We would, however, prefer an automatic. We would welcome your comments and recommendations please. Price guide £15,000.

Suzuki has dropped its SX4 1.6 SZ5 4WD 5-speed manual at £14,235, so go for the SX4 SZ4 2WD automatic at £13,420 and fit the car with a set of winter tyres for the winter. Winter tyres are usually more effective than 4WD anyway. Test of the 2WD SX4 1.6 here (I like it a lot): www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/suzuki/suzuki-sx4-.../ and car-by-car review, with problems that have cropped up, here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/suzuki/sx4-2006
