Why are short journeys in my BMW 118d insufficient to charge the battery?
I drove to Colchester in my 2008-registered BMW E87 118d on 20 October. The journey of 70 miles return was achieved without mishap. However on 21 October, whilst entering a car park, the malfunction display icon illuminated (ref page 44 of owners hand book) which advised I could continue my journey but advised the system should be checked. This was actioned on 25 October by the supplying main dealer, Cooper Chelmsford, at a cost of £24.49. The diagnosis was that the battery needed charging at a cost of £36.79.
On 24 November 2010, following a drive of 12/15 miles, the malfunction icon illuminated again. I was informed that my mileage is insufficient to maintain a healthy battery. I asked how many miles do I have to cover to support a healthy battery. What do I do now? Leave the unusable car (cost £22,000) on the driveway, or spend £36.79 every six weeks or so to charge a battery?

This is a problem with Efficient Dynamics. You aren't driving far enough for the type of regenerating alternator it is fitted with to function properly and recharge the battery. You may also start running into problems with the diesel particulate filter. For short distances, diesels like this are not suitable. You should have been asked what sort of mileage you are likely to cover and been advised accordingly. This is negligence by the dealer in selling you a car unsuited to the type of use to which you are putting it. Had you been covering big distances, then it would have been perfect. As it is, you would probably be better off with a petrol engine or with a petrol hybrid such as a Toyota Auris hybrid.
