Buying a Jaguar X-Type
I am thinking of buying a Jaguar X-Type in 2012. I only drive 4000 miles a year with many short journeys. I could spend up to 10k. Prefer automatic but manual OK. Petrol or diesel? AWD or not? 20k miles or 80k miles? 2.0, 2.5 or 3-litre? Better to spend 6k or 10k?

Don't get a late diesel 2.0 or 2.2. They have DPFs and are prone to DPF problems. Don't get the 2.1 V6 because that is an oddball engine and parts could be a problem. That leaves the 2.5 or 3.0 and both are 4WD. They can be reliable. One Autocar reader had well over 300,000 miles from one. And every single X-Type made is chain cam, whether petrol or diesel. The only Jags that aren't are the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels.
