What car for my varied needs?

My needs are varied. Most trips tend to be in the city with the occasional long trip and an annual journey to the Black Forest in Germany.

I thought of a supermini estate (Pug 207SW), but people tell me to avoid all Peugeots. It may not be a good long distance cruiser.

So in today's austere times which car is better for the above scenarios, a Peugeot 308SW or Volvo V50 or Mercedes-Benz A-Class?

A-Class about to be replaced. V50 nice but now long in the tooth (DRIVEe cheap to run and tax). 308SW and smaller 207SW okay, best with 1.6THP 156 petrol engine that will do 40 - 45mpg.
