Nissan Qashqai tyre wear

The handbook for my new 2011 Qashqai 4X4 directs that wheels should be switched front to back every 3000 miles. That seems very frequent to me and means I will be in and out of my local tyre fitting garage every few weeks. Is it really necessary?

It's to even out the tyre were because greater wear on any tyre will confuse the four wheel drive system.
