Engine management light on a Golf

The engine management light came on about 6 months ago and says emissions workshop.

I took it to the garage and they plugged into diagnostics machine, but said it just came up with random misfire.

All has been well as the light went off again, but it came back on yesterday.

Surely this can't be right? There must be something wrong if it has come back on again?

I have rang a different garage and due to take it there tomorrow, but I don't know whether to bother now if I get the same answer?

I have checked on your site and there is a garage by where I live recommended, do you think I'd be better taking it there instead? Just don't want to ignore it as obviously something's not right.
