Winter Tyres for Golf TDI
I currently have a 2004 VW Golf 2.0 GTTDi 140 with 225/45/R17 wheels, these are hopeless in the winter and especially caught out in the snow.
I have purchased a spare set of 15'' steel rims with a view to fitting some 195/65/R15 winter tyres. These rims clear the calipers ok.
It has been suggested that I try the Bridgestone A001, however my understanding is that these are an all season tyre not specifically a winter tyre.
What is the difference and what do you recommend that I fit. Are the 196/65 the best size for my car on these rims? I only do 6000 miles a year, most in the winter due to commuting mainly by motorcycle, except if the risk of snow and ice is there. I dont use the car abroad.
I will be due replacement tyres for the original rims in the spring, any recommendations, I currently run Pirelli P Zero Rosso's.
I have always purchased premium brands.

That's right about the Bridgestones. Having bought a separate set of steels for the winter, better to go for full winter tyres on them, such as Michelin Alpins or Pirelli Sotto Zeros.
195/65 R15s reads right to me. That's the size that was on the Focus ECOnetic I ran in 2008, roughly equivalent rolling circumference to 225/45 R17s, and the Focus handled brilliantly on them.
