Why does my EV show a longer range than the claimed figures?

The official WLTP range of my Kia Soul is 280 miles, but when fully charged it's showing 310 miles. Any ideas why this should be?

In a similar manner to the vehicle range display in a petrol or diesel vehicle, the remaining range in an electric vehicle is calculated from the current state of charge of the battery (or fuel tank) as well as the recent consumption rate. It is important to consider that this is an estimate based on historical data rather than an absolute, so if your driving style changes that range could reduce quickly. The official WLTP figure is also an estimate based on a specific test designed to allow comparison between different vehicles, and an individual vehicle's range can be below, or in this case, above that figure.
