XF 2.0 diesel 2017
I'm looking at 2017 XF 2.0 diesel with twin turbo ingenium engine (25D) and 4WD. It has only done around 50k and seems to have a full service history. I have factored in the slight extra fuel consumption for the twin turbo and 4WD but my main concern is reliability and quality of the Jaguar built engine (as opposed to the 2.2 ford engine used in the previous model). Researching the net, I have read some horror stories and some people saying things like "avoid this engine like the plague!" DPFs, turbos, timing chains, oil leaks and all sorts of issues mentioned. One thing I have noticed is there was an oil leak reported on the MOT history and the car has only done 3k miles since August, having been taken in part exchange (had done 8k a year previous). Could this indicate a period off the road trying to fix issues?
On the plus side, it seems to have been very well looked after (same owner since almost new) and is being sold by an approved used Jaguar retailer and comes with 12 months warranty. As it has a fair amount of power it is also likely that the engine has not had to work as hard so this could work in its favour over the lower powered engines. But there are two turbos which could fail rather than 1 !!
Do you think this is a good buy at around 13k compared to a similar age and mileage 5 series or E class for around 20K? I guess an extended warranty would be vital too. Apart from the extra cost it is also hard to find a 5 series with lumbar support, split rear seats and such high spec such as sunroofs, especially if you want one with good ride quality as the adaptive damper option is very hard to find. I could probably live with a small reliability risk if the comfort and drive is as good as a BMW and ride quality is better.
Is it the case that the ingenium engine is unlikely to be last for a high mileage as it is made with cheap parts (I have heard the drive chain mentioned) even if well looked after? Some people seem to have reported changing the oil every 6000 miles because they were so concerned about preventing issues.
What do you recommend as the best buys for a budget up to 20k in this sector? Medium to large saloon with good comfort levels and reliability.

There is an element of risk with any used vehicle, and while a full service history reduces the potential risk of experiencing problems it does not eliminate it entirely. We have seen several reports of owners experiencing problems with the Ingenium diesel engine, particularly in respect of timing chain failure. An extended warranty is a sensible precaution but it would be crucial to confirm that any potential engine issues would be covered by this. If reliability is the prime concern we would suggest looking at the Honest John Satisfaction Survey - you can see the ten most reliable car brands here - www.honestjohn.co.uk/guides/most-reliable-car-bran.../
