Recommended small car

I am looking to replace my 2001 Ford KA, which is now for sale online.

In the past I have tended to buy second hand cars that are a couple of years old, and sell when they start to get tired but still have a little residual value.

We have a Toyota Landcruiser for pulling various trailers, carting the dogs around, and all the heavy jobs, so this second car is for running around with the odd motorway trip. Apart from the dogs, there is only my Wife and I.

I have started looking at cars like the Citroen C1 etc. of which there are many different manufacturers and models. We have the cash to buy new if there was a particularly good deal but in the past we have bought second hand because of the depreciation.

We are not worried about the manufacturer or colour! The most important criteria are that it should be cheap to run, tax, service etc, and reliability and longevity as we will probably keep it for ten years.

As my head is spinning with all the possible options, your recommendations would be gratefully received!

The particularly good deal in this class of car seems to be base model Nissan Pixos for £5,995.
