Recommend a small family car

Hello, our Ford Focus 1.6 has recently died (broken cambelt), and urgently need a new car. Like the medium sized cars, and need plently of boot space. Have a budget of approx £7000. Happy to use petrol or diesel, and would also contemplate automatic. What do you recommend?

Mazda 3 1.6s are quite nice, with the colossal benefit (in your case) of a chain cam rather than belt cam engine. Golf 1.4 and 1.6FSIs and 1.4TSIs are also chain cam.
