DPFs and DMFs still an issue?

I've read with interest your advice regarding low mileage and the problems with DPFs and also your view of the potential expense of failing dual density flywheels etc. for diesels - would these be issues for even 'reliable' brands such as Honda and Toyota? I ask the question in particular as some of their top models these days are only offered as a diesel variant?

Honda has only very recently switched from 2.2iCDTI non DPF engines to 2.2iDTEC with DPF engines and I have yet to hear of any problems with this installation. I have not heard of any problems with dual mass flywheels on Honda diesels either, but these ahve in the apst been a problem on Toyotas.

Toyota actually offers an alternative 2.0i Valvematic petrol engine with CVT automatic on the RAV-4 and this is lower CO2 and more economical than the diesel automatic. The same is almost true of the Avensis.
