Should I use a fuel system cleaner for a GDI engine?

Is there any evidence that a fuel system cleaner can stop the build up of carbon in a GDI engine, especially one fitted with a turbo?

Using a reputable, high quality fuel system cleaner does make a difference, according to those that use it or product testers that have sampled it before an after. There doesn't appear to be any peer-reviewed scientific evidence, but a turbocharged direct injection engine with some miles on it is exactly the type that should benefit most from a good cleaner such as Gumout or a Lucas product.
