Can I upgrade my car's headlights to HID?

My car's headlights are not that great especially on the country roads I use in winter. Can I legally upgrade to HID and if not, what upgrade would you recommend?

Aftermarket HID kits are now banned on cars and can result in an MoT failure. We'd recommend first trying to fit upgraded halogen headlamp bulbs to your existing lights. There are many on the market which promise a 50 per cent increase in brightness or more - we'd recommend Osram Nightbreakers or Ring Xenon bulbs.
