Using a spare tyre
I have a three-year-old Vauxhall Astra Estate on 18,600 miles. My two front tyres will need replacing in the next 1000-1500 miles. My spare in the boot is unused. Is there any reason why I cannot/should not use the spare as one replacement and purchase only one new tyre, putting the best of the old front tyres in the boot as the spare?

If you can find a matching new tyre, no reason not to. But I very much doubt that you will be able to find a new tyre that matches the three-year-old spare.
