Your humple servant
I have had exactly the same experience as I.Q.’ with severe tyre damage to the front tyres on my X Type Jaguar. I have written to Kent County Council and to my MP. My MP is appalled and has written to the Secretary of State for Transport, whereas KCC who are responsible for the roads in Kent maintains that: "We are not aware of any cases where damage was caused when they were driven over in a safe and respectable manner.” The vast majority of motorists are blissfully unaware of the potentially fatal hazards that these small humps present and continue to try to straddle them. I try to adopt the procedures that you advocate, but it is often impossible so to do because of parked vehicles, or oncoming traffic. It seems to me that the greatest problem is getting the responsible road authorities to accept that they have solved one problem (for buses and ambulances) by creating another, far worse one, which will certainly have fatal consequences, if they have not occurred already. I live in Maidstone. The single humps in the town all have broken edges and there is no sign of any maintenance having been performed for months. Even if it were, vehicles would soon break up the edges again and winter frost and ice will compound the problem. Is a national campaign the answer to this and would the Daily Telegraph consider taking it up?

A lot of people have made a lot of money out of installing speed cushions when it would have been far better spent on the roads. I'm still working on setting up a test to find out how much damage they do to inner tyre shoulders. Tyre manufacturers have been unwilling to help because they are afraid that the test results will reflect badly on them, but a major tyre distributor might be up for it.
