Chieri blossoms

I was driving in the Chieri region of Italy between Turin and Asti last week. I observed traffic lights that had a LED display indicating how many seconds were left before the lights changed. If the lights were green, the display was green, and if red, it was red. Also, when you arrived at the start of a new speed limit, there was a speed indicating display incorporated in the limit sign. Both of these seemed eminently sensible and useful. Not, of course, that the Italians were taking any notice of them, and nor will they do until speeding is an endorsable offence in Italy. They just regard the fines as a charge for driving fast. One Italian I mentioned the UK law to replied, incredulously, "If you lost your licence how would you go anywhere?" By the way, I just sold one of my Fulvia Zagatos at Dorset Classic & Vintage Auction at Templecombe (which is actually in Somerset) for £7,000. I thoroughly recommend DCVA, which is also a very attractive venue.

I saw the same system in Bangkok in 2003, photographed it and pushed quite heavily for its adoption in the UK, but it was ignored because UK light sequences depend on the relative numbers of queuing traffic.
