Do distance selling regulations apply to car sales if I collect the vehicle?

I'm about to buy an approved used Audi from a franchised main dealer. I've not seen the car, though I have driven others of that type back in October 2020. If I pay online and sign the contract online, then click and collect the car, can I return the car within 14 days (subject to limited mileage and in a similar condition)? Apart from an annoyed dealer, would there be any issue in getting my money back? Not that I have plans to do this but it's a risk spending £30k online, even from a large dealer group. Thanks so much for all your work with the motoring public. You are superb.

Firstly, thank you for your kind words. Secondly, yes - my understanding is that if you complete the sale remotely then you're covered by the so-called distance selling regulations. When it comes to a Click&Collect car sale, this generally isn't covered by the same regulations - but it depends on which parts of the sale are completed where. For example, whilst you might have placed the order online and paid a deposit, dealers sometimes ask you to come in to sign the contract and/or any finance agreements, or pay the balance on site. As you'd still have had contact with the seller on their premises during the process of finalising your purchase, the additional right to cancel your purchase within 14 days given by the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 would not apply.

That said, it sounds like you know your stuff and would be covered by the distance selling regulations. I'd also have a read of this for some extra clarity: www.themotorombudsman.org/distance-sales-faqs
